- Install the joining link with the open end of the retaining clip facing opposite to the direction of chain travel — this ensures chain movement pushes the clip onto the pins rather than dislodging it.
- Confirm the outer side plate is fully and evenly seated on both pins before fitting the retaining clip.
- Use circlip pliers or a purpose-made clip tool to seat the retaining clip securely; do not attempt to press it into place with a screwdriver, as this risks distorting or unseating the clip.
- Clip-type joining links are generally intended for single use — fit a new join link if the chain is removed and reinstalled rather than reusing the original clip.
- Lubricate the join link thoroughly after installation using a lubricant compatible with O-ring chains if the chain is O-ring type.
- Inspect the retaining clip and side plate at each scheduled service interval or after hard use to confirm neither has shifted, cracked, or deformed.
- For high-load or racing applications, check your chain manufacturer's recommendation — a rivet-type joining link may be specified instead of a clip type.
