- Soak the new friction plates in clean engine oil of the grade specified for your TTR250 before assembly, so the first engagement is not made dry.
- Inspect the clutch basket and inner hub for notching or stepping while the clutch is apart — worn fingers will cause the new plates to drag or hang up.
- Check the clutch cover gasket and replace it if it is torn or hardened; have a fresh gasket on hand before starting the job.
- Fit the plates in the correct friction/drive sequence and tighten the pressure plate bolts evenly in a criss-cross pattern to your workshop manual's torque figures.
- Use a wet-clutch-suitable engine oil and avoid friction-modified or energy-conserving automotive oils, which can cause slip.
- Refill with the correct oil quantity and check the level before starting, then re-check for leaks around the cover once the engine is warm.
- Adjust free play at the clutch lever and cable after fitting, and re-check it after the first ride as the plates settle.
- Bed the clutch in with gentle riding for the first heat cycles — avoid hard launches, heavy loads and prolonged slipping until it has settled.
- Change the engine oil at the intervals in your service schedule; clean oil is the main thing that determines clutch plate life.
- Replace friction and drive plates as a complete set rather than mixing new plates with worn ones.
