- Inspect the filter before every ride; replace if the foam is torn, perished, or no longer holds its shape.
- Clean the filter regularly — frequency depends on conditions; muddy or dusty riding demands more frequent servicing.
- Use a dedicated foam air filter cleaner or a mild solvent; work it gently through the foam, rinse thoroughly with warm water, and allow the filter to dry completely in open air before re-oiling.
- Do not use compressed air to clean or dry the filter — it can tear the foam structure.
- Once fully dry, apply a quality foam filter oil evenly across the entire filter surface, working it into the foam by hand until fully saturated; remove any excess oil before fitting.
- Ensure the filter seats correctly in the airbox with no gaps around the rim — unfiltered air bypassing the filter will cause accelerated engine wear.
- Check the airbox boot/seal and airbox lid sealing surfaces at each service to confirm no dirt ingress paths exist.
- Store a cleaned, dry, unoiled spare filter in a sealed bag to keep it dust-free between uses.
