The Metzeler ME 888 Marathon Ultra is a rear tyre built for riders who cover serious distance on heavyweight cruisers, big tourers and custom V-twins. This is the 260/40 VR18 84V tubeless fitment, sized for wide-rear customs and baggers running an 18-inch rear rim.
Metzeler's focus with the ME 888 was mileage without giving up handling. A flat, wide profile spreads load out toward the sidewall to slow the wear process, while a steel-belted radial construction keeps the carcass stable and distributes heat evenly at touring speeds. The tread pattern is an evolution of the long-running ME 880, reworked for more even wear across the face and better water clearance, with silica in the compound adding chemical grip when the road turns wet.

- Have the tyre fitted and balanced by a qualified motorcycle tyre technician — 260-section radials need the correct machine and rim width.
- Check the sidewall rotation arrow is pointing the right way before the wheel goes back in.
- Scrub the tyre in gently for the first stretch of riding: the new surface has less grip until the release agents wear off, so avoid hard acceleration, heavy braking and deep lean angles early on.
- Set cold inflation pressure to the figure in your motorcycle's owner's manual or on the swingarm placard, not to the maximum figure on the sidewall.
- Check pressures when the tyre is cold, at least monthly and before any long ride — under-inflation on a heavy cruiser causes rapid shoulder wear and heat build-up.
- Inspect regularly for cuts, embedded objects, bulges and uneven or stepped wear, and replace before tread reaches the 1.5 mm legal minimum required in Australia.
- As a tubeless tyre, fit a compatible tubeless rim and a serviceable valve; replace the valve and seal when the tyre is changed.
- Clean with mild soap and water only. Keep tyre-shine dressings, solvents, petrol and chain lube off the tread and sidewalls.
- Store spare tyres upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, ozone sources such as electric motors, and chemicals.
- Avoid overloading beyond your motorcycle's rated capacity, and re-check pressures when carrying a pillion or luggage.
