The Metzeler ME 888 Marathon Ultra is a rear tyre built for riders who cover serious distance on heavyweight cruisers, big tourers and custom V-twins. It is the long-haul member of the Metzeler cruiser range, developed in Germany with American V-twin machines squarely in mind.
Metzeler tuned the profile, casing, tread pattern and compound together rather than in isolation, with the aim of holding onto mileage without giving away handling. The flat, wide footprint shape channels stress out toward the sidewall to slow the wear process, while abrasion-resistant polymers in the compound stretch out the life of the tread. A high silica content adds chemical grip when the road turns wet, and the tread pattern — an evolution of the earlier ME 880 — is shaped to clear water and wear evenly right across its width.

- Have the tyre fitted, balanced and inspected by a qualified motorcycle tyre technician — never attempt to fit a bias-belted tyre without the correct equipment.
- This is a tubeless (TL) tyre: fit it to a rim rated for tubeless use, and fit a new valve or valve seal at the same time.
- Match the direction-of-rotation arrow moulded into the sidewall to the wheel's rotation when fitting.
- Scrub the tyre in gently for the first stretch of riding, avoiding hard acceleration, heavy braking and full lean angles until the release agents have worn off the surface.
- Check cold inflation pressure at least weekly and before long rides, setting it to the pressure specified by your motorcycle's manufacturer for your load — pressure has more effect on wear and handling than anything else you control.
- Do not exceed the load index or speed rating of the tyre, and take account of pillion and luggage weight on a loaded tourer.
- Inspect regularly for cuts, bulges, embedded stones or nails and uneven wear; have any damage assessed before riding, and replace the tyre rather than relying on a repair for high-speed touring use.
- Check tread depth against the legal minimum in your state and replace the tyre before it reaches the moulded wear indicators.
- Keep the tread and sidewalls free of petrol, oil, solvents and silicone-based tyre dressings; clean with mild soapy water only.
- Store spare tyres upright in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and away from electric motors, which generate ozone that degrades rubber.
- For consistent handling, pair the rear with the corresponding ME 888 Marathon Ultra front rather than mixing patterns front to rear.
