- Have the relay fitted by a qualified technician; incorrect fitting can damage the relay and voids warranty.
- Diagnose the cause of the original failure first — a dragging or shorted starter motor, corroded or undersized cables, poor earths or a flat battery will destroy a new relay in the same way.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead before removing or fitting the relay, and refit it last when reconnecting.
- Compare the new relay against the old one for part number, terminal layout and mounting arrangement before installing.
- Clean the battery, starter and earth terminals back to bright metal; corrosion and voltage drop are common causes of repeat relay failure.
- Fit the heavy cables to the correct posts, tighten the terminal nuts firmly without overtightening, and refit any insulating boots or covers so the terminals cannot short against the frame.
- Mount the relay in its original location and retain the rubber mount or bracket — it isolates the unit from vibration.
- Make sure the battery is fully charged and in good health before testing; low voltage causes chattering and heavy contact wear.
- A rapid clicking with no cranking usually indicates low voltage or a poor connection rather than a faulty relay — re-check the circuit before condemning the part.
- Keep the relay dry: avoid aiming a pressure washer or hose directly at it, and store the spare in its packaging in a cool, dry place.
