- Charge the device fully via USB-C before first use; avoid fully depleting the lithium-ion battery before recharging to preserve long-term capacity.
- Activate an inReach satellite subscription plan via the Garmin Explore app before departing — messaging, live tracking, and SOS functions are unavailable without an active plan.
- Test two-way messaging and confirm your subscription is active while you still have mobile coverage, before entering remote terrain.
- Update firmware and download maps via Wi-Fi using the Garmin Explore app or the Garmin Express desktop application; keep firmware current for best satellite acquisition performance.
- Download satellite imagery over Wi-Fi at home or camp — imagery downloads are large and require a stable connection; no subscription is required for imagery.
- The barometric altimeter can be calibrated manually to a known elevation or set to auto-calibrate via GPS — recalibrate when pressure conditions change significantly for accurate elevation readings.
- Clean the housing and touchscreen with a soft, lightly damp cloth; do not use solvents, abrasive cleaners, or aerosol sprays, which can damage the display coating.
- IPX7 rating permits immersion to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes — rinse with fresh water after exposure to salt water or mud, then dry thoroughly before storage.
- Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and temperatures above 60 °C; if storing for extended periods, remove the battery pack.
- Use Garmin-approved vehicle mounts when fitting to a motorcycle or ATV — secure mounting reduces vibration transmission and protects the USB-C port from fatigue.
