The Garmin Montana 710i is a rugged handheld GPS navigator with built-in inReach satellite technology, combining full topographic navigation with two-way messaging and interactive SOS over the global Iridium network. It is built around a 5-inch touchscreen that stays usable with gloves on, so it reads easily on the bars of an adventure bike as well as in the hand.

It suits riders heading beyond mobile coverage — outback touring, remote trail riding and multi-day adventure travel — as well as hiking, kayaking and ATV use. Preloaded routable topographic and street maps handle the route, while the altimeter, barometer and 3-axis compass add context when the terrain gets serious.

Two-way messaging, live tracking, inReach weather and SOS require an active inReach satellite subscription (sold separately). Mounts and mapping upgrades are also sold separately.

  • Charge the internal lithium-ion battery fully with a USB-C cable before your first ride, and top it up before any long trip.
  • Activate an inReach satellite subscription before you depart — messaging, live tracking, inReach weather and SOS will not work without one.
  • Send a test message and confirm satellite connection while still in a known-good area, so you know the inReach side is working before you lose mobile coverage.
  • For satellite messaging and SOS, give the unit a clear view of the sky; heavy tree cover, canyons, panniers and metal fairings can block the signal.
  • Download maps, satellite imagery and any Outdoor Maps+ content over Wi-Fi at home — these files are large and cannot be pulled in over satellite.
  • Keep the device firmware and mapping current using Garmin Express or the Garmin Explore app before major trips.
  • Use Expedition Mode on multi-day trips to stretch tracking well beyond normal GPS runtime when you don't need live navigation.
  • Wipe the screen and housing with a soft, damp cloth after dusty or muddy rides; avoid solvents, fuel and harsh cleaners, and dry the USB-C port area before charging.
  • The unit is water-resistant and meets MIL-STD 810, but treat that as protection against weather and splashes rather than an invitation to submerge it.
  • Check the mount and any bracket fasteners regularly on the bike — sustained vibration works fixings loose — and remove the device when parked for long periods.
  • Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, with a partial charge, and recharge periodically during extended storage.
  • Trigger SOS only in a genuine emergency; once sent, stay with the device and keep it powered so Garmin Response can maintain contact.
