- Standard (non-sealed) chains have no internal grease seals, so lubrication must be applied regularly — more frequently than O-ring or X-ring chains.
- Clean the chain thoroughly with a purpose-made motorcycle chain cleaner before each lubrication; avoid petroleum-based solvents that may damage surrounding rubber or painted components.
- Apply chain lubricant to the inner side of the chain (the side contacting the sprocket teeth) while rotating the rear wheel slowly by hand, allowing lubricant to work into the rollers.
- Check chain tension and alignment at the intervals specified in your motorcycle's service manual — incorrect tension accelerates wear and can be unsafe.
- Inspect regularly for stiff or seized links, surface corrosion, kinked side plates, and wear stretch; replace the chain if it exceeds your service manual's wear-limit specification.
- Always replace the chain and both sprockets (front counter-shaft and rear) together as a matched set — fitting a new chain on worn sprockets, or vice versa, significantly shortens service life.
- Avoid directing high-pressure water jets at the chain, as this strips lubricant and drives contaminants into the rollers and bushings.
- When fitting a masterlink, install the retaining clip with the closed end facing the direction of chain travel.
