Remove the old bearing races completely and clean the steering head and stem before installing the new components; do not fit new bearings against old or damaged races.
Pack the bearings with a good-quality waterproof grease before assembly and grease the seal lips on installation.
Set steering head preload to the figure specified by the motorcycle manufacturer — over-tightening causes premature wear, while under-tightening allows steering head play.
