- Lubricate the chain regularly with a quality motorcycle chain lubricant, applying to the inner side of the chain while rotating the wheel slowly.
- Check and adjust chain tension at the intervals specified in your Suzuki DR 650 SE owner's manual, and after the first few hundred kilometres on a new chain as initial stretch occurs.
- Inspect the chain for tight links, kinking, or excessive side play, and inspect both sprockets for hooked or asymmetrically worn teeth at each service.
- Clean the chain with a dedicated chain cleaner or kerosene applied with a brush; avoid high-pressure washing directly at the chain or sprocket area as this strips lubricant and can damage O-rings if present.
- Always replace chain and both sprockets together — fitting a new chain to worn sprockets (or vice versa) accelerates wear on all components.
- When fitting, ensure the chain joining clip (master link) is installed with the closed end facing the direction of chain travel.
- After installation, recheck chain tension after the first ride as the chain will seat into the sprocket teeth.
- Store the bike with the chain cleaned and freshly lubricated if it will be unused for an extended period, to prevent corrosion.
