- Replace the chain and both sprockets as a complete set — mixing a new chain with worn sprockets (or vice versa) accelerates wear on all components.
- Lubricate the chain regularly with a dedicated motorcycle chain lubricant; apply to the inner side of the chain while rotating the wheel slowly.
- Check and adjust chain tension to the specification in your Kawasaki Versys-X 300 owner's manual after fitting and again after the first 500 km of use, as a new chain will seat and stretch slightly.
- Clean the chain with a purpose-made chain cleaner and a brush; avoid petroleum-based solvents or high-pressure washers directed at the sprocket bearings and seals.
- Inspect the chain for tight or stiff links after each cleaning; a stiff link indicates inadequate lubrication or potential damage.
- Check sprocket teeth for hooked, shark-fin, or excessively rounded profiles at each service interval; worn tooth profiles will rapidly wear a new chain.
- Bed in the new drive-train gradually — avoid sustained full-throttle acceleration or aggressive power delivery for the first 200–300 km to allow the chain and sprockets to seat evenly.
- Store unused components in a dry location away from moisture, road salt, and chemical fumes to prevent corrosion prior to fitting.
