- Inspect the drive chain for stretch and wear before fitting new sprockets — a worn chain will accelerate wear on new sprockets and should be replaced at the same time.
- Check that the front sprocket retaining clip or nut is secured and torqued to the motorcycle manufacturer's specification on installation.
- Verify chain alignment after fitting both sprockets; misalignment causes uneven wear and premature failure.
- Check and adjust chain tension after the first few rides following installation, as components may settle slightly.
- Lubricate the chain regularly, especially in farm, dusty, or muddy conditions where contamination builds up quickly.
- Inspect sprocket teeth periodically for hooking, sharp edges, or uneven wear — these are signs of chain stretch or alignment issues.
- Keep the sprocket and chain area clear of caked mud and debris, which can accelerate wear and cause chain derailment.
- Do not fit new sprockets with a stretched or worn chain, and do not fit a new chain over heavily worn sprockets.
