  • Replace the chain and both sprockets as a set — running a new chain on worn sprockets, or worn sprockets with a new chain, accelerates wear on the new parts.
  • Check that the 428 pitch and 96-link length suit your bike's current gearing and swingarm length before fitting; shorten the chain only with a proper chain breaker and rivet or clip the joining link exactly as the chain instructions specify.
  • Torque the front and rear sprocket fasteners to the values in the Suzuki DS80/JR80 workshop manual and re-check them after the first ride.
  • Set chain slack to the specification in the owner's manual, measured at the tightest point of the chain's rotation, and re-check wheel alignment after any adjustment.
  • Clean the chain with a dedicated chain cleaner or kerosene and a soft brush — avoid wire brushes, petrol, high-pressure washers and strong solvents, which strip lubricant and can damage O-rings if fitted.
  • Lubricate the chain with a motorcycle chain lubricant while it is warm and clean, applying to the inner run so lube is carried onto the rollers; wipe off excess.
  • Re-tension and re-lubricate more often after riding in mud, sand, dust or wet conditions, which is typical use for these bikes.
  • Inspect regularly for hooked or pointed sprocket teeth, tight or kinked links, and rust; dry and lubricate the chain promptly after washing or wet rides.
  • Expect a short bedding-in period: check and adjust chain slack again after the first few hours of riding, as new chains settle quickly.
  • Store spare or unfitted kit components in their original packaging in a dry place to prevent surface corrosion.
