- Inspect the sprocket teeth for hooked, shark-fin or excessively worn profiles every service interval or approximately every 10,000 km — replace before this causes chain skip or accelerated chain wear.
- Always replace the chain and rear sprocket at the same time if wear is evident; mixing a new sprocket with a worn chain shortens the life of both components.
- Ensure the countershaft nut or retaining clip is torqued or seated to the motorcycle manufacturer's specification after fitment — an under-torqued front sprocket can walk off the shaft.
- Lubricate the chain regularly according to your chain manufacturer's recommendation; adequate lubrication significantly reduces sprocket wear.
- After installation, check chain tension and alignment against your motorcycle's service manual before riding.
- Keep the sprocket and chain free of accumulated grime, road debris and corrosive materials such as brake fluid or battery acid; clean with a suitable chain-and-sprocket cleaner and a brush.
- Store the sprocket in a dry environment away from moisture if not fitted immediately; light surface rust on steel can be removed before installation but deep pitting may compromise integrity.
