The RMSTATOR RM10001 is a DVA (direct voltage adapter) — also called a peak reading adapter — that connects to a standard digital multimeter so it can measure the peak voltage produced by powersport charging and ignition systems.

Small-engine ignition systems generate electricity with permanent magnets, and that output travels down the wiring as very short, fast voltage spikes. A normal multimeter averages voltage, so on its own it will usually show a low reading or nothing at all. The RM10001 captures those spikes and presents them in a form your meter can display, which is why powersport service specifications are quoted as peak or DVA voltages.

It suits home mechanics and workshops diagnosing hard-starting, no-spark and charging faults on motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, snowmobiles and other small-engine machines. A stator can read correct on a resistance test yet still be faulty — windings shorted internally or to ground, or weak flywheel magnets — and a DVA reading is what exposes those problems.

  • Connect the adapter to your digital multimeter, then take readings at the harness connectors specified for the test — always follow the instructions supplied with the adapter and the machine's own service manual.
  • Compare your readings against the DVA/peak voltage figures published in the manufacturer's service manual for that model; peak specifications are not the same as the AC or DC values a meter shows without an adapter.
  • Test with the engine cranking or running as the manual directs, and keep the leads, your hands and loose clothing well clear of the flywheel, fan, chain and exhaust.
  • Treat ignition circuits as live and potentially high voltage — hold test leads by the insulated probe bodies and never grip a bare probe tip or terminal while cranking.
  • Check the leads, clips and insulation for cuts, cracks or corrosion before each use, and stop using the adapter if any conductor is exposed.
  • Keep the adapter and its connections dry; wipe the housing and leads with a soft, lightly damp cloth and let them dry fully before packing away.
  • Do not clean with solvents, petrol, brake cleaner or contact cleaner, and don't immerse the adapter or pressure-wash it.
  • Store it in a dry toolbox or drawer away from heat, fuel and battery acid, with the leads coiled loosely rather than kinked tightly around the body.
  • If readings look implausible, confirm your meter's own battery and range setting first, and verify the adapter on a circuit you know to be good before condemning a stator or coil.
