- Always replace the sprocket together with the chain and, where practical, the front sprocket — mixing worn and new components accelerates wear on both.
- Before fitting, verify the sprocket's bolt pattern and centre bore match your specific motorcycle model.
- Torque all sprocket mounting bolts to your motorcycle manufacturer's specified value using a calibrated torque wrench.
- After installation, check and set chain tension to the manufacturer's recommended specification before riding.
- Inspect chain and sprocket teeth regularly — hooked, shark-fin or visibly worn teeth indicate the sprocket should be replaced.
- Keep the chain properly lubricated at the interval recommended by your motorcycle manufacturer; a dry chain accelerates sprocket wear significantly.
- Avoid high-pressure washing directed at the sprocket hub and bearings; rinse gently and re-lubricate the chain afterwards.
- Aluminium alloy sprockets wear faster than steel — on high-mileage road bikes, expect a shorter service life than a steel equivalent and inspect more frequently.
