The Rjays Pilot is a mid-height road boot built for everyday riding in Australian conditions. A PU leather upper is teamed with a Korean Hipora waterproof and breathable membrane, so wet-weather commutes and cool-morning starts don't end with soaked socks.

Protection is handled by moulded Italian Techno GI toe and heel reinforcement plus 4mm moulded EVA ankle padding, while a memory-foam in-sock, comfort mesh lining and vulcanised rubber sole keep it wearable all day on and off the bike. The zip and Velcro closure makes it quick to get on over riding trousers, and a gear change pad protects the instep from shifter wear.

  • Do up the zip fully and press the Velcro flap closed over it before every ride so the closure seals and the membrane is protected.
  • Wear riding trousers over the boot rather than tucked in — the Hipora membrane keeps water out through the upper, but rain can still run in over the top.
  • Clean the PU leather upper with a soft damp cloth and mild soapy water, then wipe off residue; keep petrol, solvents, degreasers and harsh chemicals away from the upper and stitching.
  • Do not machine wash or fully submerge the boots, and never dry them with a heater, hairdryer or in direct sun — heat can harden the PU and damage the waterproof membrane.
  • After wet rides, open the closure fully, loosen the boot and let it dry naturally at room temperature with good airflow; loosely stuffed newspaper helps draw out moisture.
  • Air the padded in-socks between rides to control moisture and odour, and lift them out to dry separately if they are removable.
  • If you use a protectant, choose one made for synthetic (PU) uppers — leather oils, greases and dubbin are not suitable and can soften or discolour the material.
  • Keep grit out of the zip and clear debris from the Velcro so it keeps holding; a little zip lubricant occasionally keeps the slider running freely.
  • Check the vulcanised rubber sole and gear change pad for wear and replace the boots once tread grip or the shifter pad is worn through.
  • Inspect the toe, heel and ankle protection after any crash or heavy impact and retire the boots if anything is cracked, deformed or split — protective performance can't be relied on after damage.
  • Store upright in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and avoid leaving them crushed under other gear so the shape and protectors aren't distorted.
