The XAM 428AO is a 428-pitch O-ring drive chain supplied at 104 links. Its sealed rings hold factory grease between the pin and bush and help keep out grit and water, so the chain holds its adjustment longer than an equivalent unsealed chain.

It suits 428-pitch road, trail and small-capacity machines where the manufacturer specifies an O-ring chain, and is a straightforward replacement when fitting new sprockets. Other lengths in the 428AO range are available if 104 links is not the correct fitment for your bike.

  • Confirm the correct pitch (428) and link count against your owner's manual or the chain being replaced before fitting; fit the chain over clean, unworn sprockets, as worn sprockets will quickly damage a new chain.
  • Join the chain with the supplied connecting link only, fitted so the clip's closed end faces the direction of chain travel, or peen the rivet link correctly if a rivet-type link is used.
  • Set chain slack to the figure specified by the motorcycle manufacturer and re-check alignment of the rear wheel after each adjustment.
  • Check and adjust slack regularly, and inspect for tight or kinked links, damaged O-rings and excessive side-to-side play.
  • Clean with a soft brush and a chain cleaner labelled as safe for O-ring chains; do not use petrol, harsh solvents, wire brushes or high-pressure washers, all of which can damage or dislodge the seals.
  • Lubricate with an O-ring-safe chain lubricant after cleaning and after riding in wet or dusty conditions, applying to the inner side of the chain so it reaches the rollers and side plates.
  • Dry and lubricate the chain after wet rides or washing to prevent surface corrosion.
  • Replace the chain and sprockets as a set once the chain reaches its wear limit; do not fit a new chain to worn sprockets or a worn chain to new sprockets.
