- Route the cable exactly as the original, following all factory guides, clips and frame channels — incorrect routing causes premature wear and binding.
- Lubricate the inner cable before installation using a dedicated cable lubricant and a cable luber tool; work lubricant through from the top until it exits the lower end.
- Adjust freeplay at the lever adjuster to the XT660R owner's manual specification; recheck after the first few rides as a new cable will seat and stretch slightly.
- Inspect the cable ends and conduit for kinks, fraying or cracking at every service interval or if clutch feel becomes notchy or heavy.
- Do not allow the cable to contact the exhaust system or any sharp edges; use the original routing hardware throughout.
- If the motorcycle is stored for an extended period, apply a light coat of cable lubricant to prevent internal corrosion.
- Discard and replace the cable immediately if any strands are frayed or if the outer conduit is cracked — do not attempt to repair a damaged cable.
