Lock the shackle around a fixed, immovable anchor and through the frame or wheel, keeping the lock body off the ground where it can be attacked with leverage.
Fill as much of the internal space as possible so there is little room for tools to be inserted inside the shackle.
Keep the key hole clean and covered where a dust cover is fitted, particularly if the lock lives outdoors.
Lubricate the cylinder periodically with a dry PTFE or graphite-based lubricant; avoid heavy oils and general-purpose sprays, which attract grit.
Rinse off road salt, sand and mud with fresh water, then dry the lock thoroughly before use to limit corrosion.
If the key turns stiffly, clean and lubricate the cylinder rather than forcing it, and never insert a key that is bent or damaged.
Store spare keys somewhere separate from the bike, and record the key number in case a replacement is needed.
Carry the lock in a bag, pannier or dedicated bracket rather than looped over handlebars or a rack, where it can bounce and damage paintwork.
