- Install and remove pilot jets using a proper flat-blade jet screwdriver that fully seats in the slot — an ill-fitting tool can damage the brass head and make future removal difficult.
- Never use wire, drill bits, or abrasives to clear a blocked orifice; compressed air and carburetor-safe solvent are the only safe cleaning methods.
- When cleaning, spray carburetor cleaner through the jet and blow through with compressed air until the orifice is unobstructed and the jet passes light cleanly.
- Inspect threads on both the jet and the carburettor body before installation; cross-threading brass jets into an aluminium carb body is a common and costly mistake.
- Tighten finger-tight then snug only — pilot jets require minimal torque and overtightening will strip the soft brass thread.
- Change jet size incrementally (typically in steps of 2.5 to 5) when tuning for altitude, temperature, or air-filter changes; keep removed jets labelled and stored dry for future reference.
- Store spare jets in a sealed container away from moisture to prevent oxidation of the brass and orifice.
- Replace any jet that shows a deformed orifice, stripped thread, or impact damage — a damaged jet cannot deliver accurate fuelling regardless of nominal size.
