Suited to workshops and home mechanics servicing four-stroke engines that use 9.48 mm outside diameter shims, which is typical of many 400cc and larger four-strokes. Check and adjust valve clearances with the engine completely cold, and follow the clearance figures and service intervals in your vehicle's workshop manual.
Confirm your engine uses 9.48 mm outside diameter shims before fitting — many 250cc four-strokes take 7.48 mm, and some KTM models use 10 mm or 8.90 mm.
Measure each shim with a micrometer before installation rather than relying on printed markings, and measure the shims you remove as well, since worn or unmarked shims can lead to an incorrect calculation.
Handle shims with clean hands or gloves and wipe them with a lint-free cloth; grit or burrs on the seating face will alter the measured clearance.
Install the shim seated flat and fully home in its bucket or retainer as described in the service manual, then rotate the engine through several turns by hand and re-measure the clearance before reassembling.
Do not grind, sand or lap a shim to change its thickness — this removes the hardened surface and causes rapid wear; fit the correct size instead.
Store the spare shims in a labelled shim tray or the original packaging in a dry place so sizes do not get mixed and surfaces do not corrode.
