- Keep hands, tools and brake components completely free of oil and grease during installation — even trace contamination will significantly reduce braking effectiveness and is not recoverable by bedding-in.
- Bed in new brake shoes gradually: perform a series of moderate stops from low speed before applying full braking force, allowing the friction material to mate fully with the drum surface.
- Inspect brake shoes for wear at each service interval or as specified in your vehicle's owner manual; replace before the friction material reaches the wear limit.
- Before fitting new shoes, inspect the brake drum for scoring, grooving or out-of-round condition — a damaged drum will accelerate shoe wear and reduce stopping power.
- Never direct chain lubricant, cleaning spray or other aerosols toward drum brake components; overspray is a common cause of contamination.
- After installation, pump the brake lever or pedal several times before moving off to seat the shoes against the drum and confirm correct free-play adjustment.
- If replacing shoes on one wheel, consider inspecting the opposite wheel's shoes at the same time to maintain balanced braking across the axle.
