- Soak new friction plates in clean engine oil for a minimum of 30 minutes before installation — this prevents glazing during initial use.
- Inspect the clutch basket and hub for notching before fitting new plates; worn notches will accelerate wear on replacement components.
- Verify clutch spring free length against the manufacturer's service specification for the specific motorcycle; replace springs as a complete set if any are below tolerance.
- Torque all clutch cover and pressure plate fasteners to the motorcycle manufacturer's specification — uneven clamping causes premature plate wear.
- Once installed, perform a controlled break-in: make several low-speed, partial-throttle clutch engagements before subjecting the clutch to full racing loads.
- Check clutch freeplay at the lever after the first ride and re-adjust as needed; new plates may settle slightly during the break-in period.
- Inspect friction and steel plates at each major service interval for glazing, warping, or wear beyond the manufacturer's minimum thickness.
- Store unused kits in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and away from brake fluid or solvents, which can degrade friction materials.
