- Clean the filter using a dedicated air filter cleaner — do not use petrol, solvents, or compressed air, as these damage the cotton gauze.
- After washing, rinse thoroughly with clean water from the clean side outward to push dirt back the way it entered.
- Allow the filter to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before re-oiling or reinstalling — never use a heat gun or compressed air to speed drying.
- Re-oil the filter using a purpose-made filter oil (BMC or compatible brand) after each clean; apply evenly and avoid over-oiling, as excess oil can foul throttle-body sensors or MAP sensors.
- Allow re-oiled filter to rest for 20–30 minutes before fitting so the oil distributes evenly through the gauze.
- Inspect the filter sealing surfaces and frame for cracks or deformation before reinstallation.
- Reinstall the filter according to the Harley Davidson service manual torque and fitment specifications for your model.
- Cleaning interval depends on riding conditions; dusty or off-road use requires more frequent inspection than sealed-road riding.
