- Clean threads on the mating bolt with a wire brush or thread chaser before installing a new lock nut — debris or corrosion on the threads affects clamping force.
- Always torque to the OEM specification for the specific fastener location; refer to your motorcycle's service manual.
- Lock nuts are a prevailing-torque fastener; inspect for visible damage or deformation before reuse and replace if in doubt.
- Do not apply thread-locking compound (e.g. Loctite) to a lock nut — the locking feature is built into the nut itself.
