  • Clean the steering stem and head tube thoroughly before fitting new bearings to remove old grease, dirt and corrosion.
  • Apply a quality waterproof or lithium-based grease to the bearing races and cones prior to installation — do not install dry.
  • Press or tap races squarely into the head tube using a suitable bearing driver or socket to avoid damaging the new races.
  • Once installed, adjust steering stem preload to achieve smooth, free movement with no notchiness or play — over-tightening the stem nut will cause premature wear.
  • After installation, check that handlebars turn lock-to-lock without binding before riding.
  • Inspect steering stem bearings periodically, particularly after hard off-road use or any immersion in water or mud.
  • If roughness, notchiness or looseness returns, re-grease or replace bearings promptly to prevent damage to the steering head.
  • Dispose of old bearings and grease according to local regulations.
