- Check the part number against your machine's year, make and model, and compare the kit against the unit you remove before fitting anything.
- Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames, heaters and other ignition sources — petrol vapour ignites readily.
- Disconnect the battery and relieve fuel system pressure before opening any fuel line or removing the pump assembly.
- Drain and clean the tank of stale fuel, rust and sediment; debris carried through from a dirty tank is a common cause of repeat pump failure.
- Fit any new seals, gaskets or O-rings supplied with the kit rather than reusing the originals, and make sure the tank flange sealing face is clean and undamaged.
- Note pump orientation, hose routing and wiring polarity during removal and reproduce them exactly on reassembly — a reversed connection can damage the new pump.
- Clean or replace the inlet strainer and fuel filter at the same time so the new pump isn't drawing through a restriction.
- Prime the system and check for leaks with the engine off, then again at idle, before riding.
- Never run the pump dry; it relies on fuel passing through it for cooling and lubrication.
- Use fresh, clean fuel, and for long storage either fill the tank with stabilised fuel or drain it — leaving ethanol-blended fuel to sit is hard on fuel system components.
